Montreal artist Denise Surprenant uses a variety of techniques and media to create these small, numbered monoprints on wood. Images range from simple signage to complex compositions that come from the juxtaposition of multiple images on a single block.
Suprenant says of her art practice, “To create art means a reaffirmation of life and its capacity to transform and a refusal of institutional constraints and customs. From a picture, an object or material, products of human activity, surge in me an easily renewable astonishment, leaving little space for doubt that may dampen my enthusiasm. The spectator continues what I have started. He or she is invited to take an active part by putting him or herself to work in my work."
