Since 1971, Frog Hollow Vermont State Craft Center has supported and celebrated individual design and craftsmanship through the exhibition and sale of fine traditional and contemporary Vermont craft. Over the course of 40 years, five hundred juried artisans, who live and work in communities throughout Vermont, have been making craft by hand with loving care and attention to detail. Frog Hollow is the first state craft center in the United States and the organization has served as a model for countless others across the country.

Frog Hollow: The First 40 Years of the Nation’s First State Craft Center surveys the history of this pioneering organization and examines how a group of people came together to build and nurture Frog Hollow over the last 40 years. It documents the impact of the creative economy on Vermont and its small, rural communities. The book provides a snapshot of the influence of the Back to the Land Movement on Vermont and how Frog Hollow is part of its legacy.

Frog Hollow: The First 40 Years of the Nation’s First State Craft Center tells the story of how a disparate group of artisans, with the support of Coca-Cola heir Allen Johnson, came together in the spirit of community. The influence of craft and the role craftmakers play in Vermont is highlighted through biography, recollection and images, including Danforth Pewter, Peter Miller, Elfriede Abbe, Sabra Field, and Woody Jackson.

Through first person accounts and an early history written by Rachel Esch, the book follows the rise of Frog Hollow through the 70s, 80s and 90s; its struggles in the first decade of this century; and its continuing path today.

Fourth Bear conveys the artist’s interest in naively drawn animals, often with their particular animal identity left ambiguous. The original hand-drawn image, of which the final print is a significantly larger reproduction, rendered the central bear extremely tiny. The final effect of the design suggests a profound closeness to bears coupled with a strange sense of fertility.

Julia Lewandoski is a Stannard, Vermont native pursuing work in the field of history.

In the Collage work offered through ARTSHOP, Geiger engages feminist themes and makes images with acrylic paint and papier collé on pages from an old book about Vincent Van Gogh. Geiger executes these images with Rauschenberg-like grace. As with her playful imagery, the work itself represents a number of conflicts. Collage, while firmly acknowledged as a fine art practice, is also an activity children are encouraged to do. Altering books is both an act of vandalism and an acknowledged, albeit emerging, art form. These contradictions are not lost on Geiger who uses the tensions created by these relationships to make work that is fiercely complex yet pop-like in their accessibility.

This catalog of work by painter Giovanna Cecchetti was published by West Branch Gallery in Stowe, Vermont. It accompanied a February 10 to April 28, 2007 exhibition which focused on the artist’s “Scrollsketches” and “Guided by Runes” series. Ric Kasini Kadour from Kasini House contributed an essay to the catalog and spoke at the opening reception. The fourteen page catalog is unbound and presented in a cover folder with a vellum wrap.

In Residence is the result of three residencies Yann Novak attended in 2007. At his residency at Kasini House in Burlington, Vermont, Novak composed and performed an Old North End soundscape which is included on this release along with works done at the Espy Foundation in Oysterville and the Satsop Cooling Tower in Elma, both in Washington. In In Residence, Novak pushes his process to the limit by abstracting his source materials beyond recognition. The result is a lonely world with distant sounds passing by the listener. The entire piece quivers with anticipation.

Vermont artist Helen Shulman once said, “I paint to keep Psyche happy.” As a psychotherapist, Shulman works to ease the soul and psyche of others, but with her paintings she soothes her own internal state. One would be remiss to categorize Shulman’s paintings with other artists who subject the public to self-indulgent, narcissistic creative endeavors. Such painters claim “art is therapy”, by which we mean art is their therapy and we sould pay attention to them because, put simply, they want attention. Shulman offers the viewer a substance far greater. As she says, “While the act of painting is an entirely private affair, the result isn’t.”

Helen Shulman: A Catalog of Recent Paintings features Ric Kasini Kadour’s essay “Helen Shulman’s Lyrical Abstrations” in which he documents the artist’s expert use of visual language to make deeply personal painting universally accessible. The essay also explores the the artist’s work as a contemporary expression of Lyrical Abstraction.

West Branch Gallery and Sculpture Park published the catalog in conjunction with an exhibition of Shulman’s work at West Branch Gallery, Stowe, Vermont, March 7-April 26, 2009.

An audiobook collaboration by Heather Bischoff and Geoff Bennington, Subobia works like a book-on-tape with book. Sound cues tell you when to advance the pages. Subobia combines manipulated images and sounds from domestic environments to conduct a reevaluation of details that are typically unnoticed. The book presents a colony of creatures (rendered from scanned images of dust bunnies) that encounter various catastrophic situations, which force them to journey from their dwellings to strange new places. They become hopelessly vulnerable and when everything seems to be approaching a disastrous end the creatures realize that things are not as bleak as they may seem.
